Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society...

Last night was like an episode of the Nickelodeon classic "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Had a late family dinner with my parents, aunt & uncle and cousins Melissa, Joe and Chris, who was visiting from Detriot. Dinner = delicious. Chris made these scrumptious grilled stuffed red peppers. Everyone's tastebuds were so happy. After dinner, Melissa had to run back over to her office for night security checks and Chris, Joe and I volunteered to go with her since at night it's kind of creepy. Why? It's sorta off any sort of main roads (actually, kinda in the middle of nowhere) and it's a huge building that was actually used during the Civil War as a hospital. Oh, and one huge entire wing is condemned. Invitation for exploration.

While Melissa did her work, Chris, Joe and I grabbed some flashlights and decided to check out the condemned wing. The first floor wasn't too bad, just kinda dirty and dusty. We decided to head up the stairs. There's a main staircase that leads to the second floor and then when you get to the landing, there are three more staircases that lead up to different rooms. First room, not too bad. Door leads to a huge attic. Second room, just a bit creepy. Lots of murder mystery books have been left in the room and a child's drawing of some kind of devil monster on the floor. Third room, got a little freaked out. There was a door that had a bunch of hinges which looked like there were padlocks at one time. Now there was just a little key-type lock that has the key in it. Joe walked over to it, followed by me and Chris. Joe put his ear to the door right before he went to open it, gave us a funny looked and motioned for us to be quiet. We all heard a little thump behind the door. Hm. Ok, maybe it's a bat. Heard another thump. Joe went to turn the key to open the door and there was a really LOUD thump. Joe and Chris made this amazing surprise face and Chris started moving out of the room toward the staircase. He has much longer legs than me so I took off in a mini run after him to keep up. He only heard my footsteps and thought I was bolting so he started running and we left poor Joe in the room to make sure the door was locked. Down the first flight of stairs, then down the second set of stairs on each others heels to get out of that wing of the building. We made it into the main hallway and Chris closed and locked the wing door behind us.

It's not over yet. We are hanging out in the hall next to the wing door, waiting for Mel to get done with her work. I heard a thump. We all got really quiet. Then thud, thud, THUD getting louder and sounding like it's coming down the stairs. Needless to say, we left that end of the hallway and quickly and smoothly moved to the other far end where Melissa's office is. We went in and told her what happened. Of course it was probably some animal living in the other attic or roof or something - but that's not good either. Anyway, we all got a great spook which, let's face it, is what we were looking for.
